Health and Safety Code Section 57008 (The California Land Environmental Restoration and Reuse Act; SB32, Escutia, Chapter 764, Statues of 2001) requires the California Environmental Protection Agency (Cal/EPA), “in cooperation with the Department of Toxic Substances Control, the State Water Resources Control Board, and the Office of Environmental Health Hazard Assessment,” to publish a list of screening numbers for specific contaminants.  In January, 2005 the Office of Environmental Health Hazard Assessment (OEHHA) released a report containing California Human Health Screening Levels (CHHSLs) for 60 chemicals. OEHHA is making available two draft reports: “California Human Health Screening Levels for Ethylbenzene” and “Revised California Human Health Screening Levels for Perchlorate.” These reports are new CHHSLs that were not released previously because new toxicity criteria were being prepared on which the CHHSLs would be based.

The draft CHHSLs for ethlybenzene are soil gas levels of 1.1 µg/L and 0.42 µg/L for residential structures on engineered fill or base soil, respectively.  The draft CHHSLs for ethlybenzene for commercial/industrial structures are soil gas levels of 3.6 µg/L and 1.4 µg/L on engineered fill or base soil, respectively.
The draft CHHSLs for perchlorate are 28 mg/kg soil for residential property and 350 mg/kg soil for commercial/industrial property.

Both draft reports are available for public review and comment.  Please provide comments to OEHHA by January 15, 2010 at the address, fax number or e-mail address below.  If you would like to receive further information on this announcement or have questions, please contact our office at (916) 324-2829 or the address below.
